Instagram crosses 27 million users, previews Android app

Instagram, a free photo sharing app, said it has surpassed 27 million registered users, at the SXSW Interactive conference.

Instagram development began in San Francisco by founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The app, which allows users to take photos, apply a digital filter and then share it on social networking websites, was launched in Apple's App Store in October 2010. After just 2 months, the company had one million registered users.

Celebrity users of this app include Justin Bieber, whose tweet of his first Instagram picture got 50 likes a minute, and long-time user Snoop Dogg, whose been using it since January of 2011.

Systrom had announced in December of last year, that the Android app was in development. At the SXSW conference, he displayed the company's upcoming Android app, but didn't provide any details. It is currently in beta and will be out "very soon".
