There’s been a lot of talk surrounding tablet computers recently, following the announcement by Microsoft that they are to release their own version, ‘Surface’, within the next few months.

Whilst speculation is rife as to whether the makers of Windows will present a real challenge to Apple’s iPad, which presently makes up 68% of the tablet market, these two will not be the only choices available to consumers, although you’d think so by the amount of fuss generated in the media.

Below are five further tablets to consider, all priced within a decent range – of course, the choice you make will depend largely on what you want to use the device for and whether it’s suitable for you.

#1: Disgo 7000 Android Tablet

This is very low-priced and depending on where you buy, ranges from around £55-100. It has a 7 inch screen (800 x 480), 1GHz ARM processor, 256MB RAM and a 4GB HDD

• Pros: Price of course is a big one here, it has connectivity options, as well as plenty of storage and as an Android device, you shouldn’t have any problems finding apps.
• Cons: Not a well-known manufacturer so this may discourage many people from buying this. Whilst the 1GHz processor isn’t too bad, the amount of RAM may make this a little sluggish.

#2: Sylvania Synet7lp Mini Tablet

This has a 1GHz ARM processor, 256MB RAM, 4GB Flash storage and camera running the Android 2.2 OS. Again, it’s priced around the same as the above.

• Pros: Again, price is an attractive feature and if you want a toy then it’s great.
• Cons: Not widely available and somewhat lacking in features.

#3: Blackberry Playbook 16GB

More expensive at around £200 (can be found for less), this has better specs with 1GB RAM, 16GB storage and back and front cameras.

• Pros: Lots of good reviews and made by RIM, a reputable name despite recent financial difficulties. More features and options.
• Cons: More expensive and apps on the BB store are limited

#4: Creative ZiiO 10” Android Tablet

This is a great buy at around £150, it has a massive 10” 1024 x 600p screen, camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and expandable memory up to 32GB via Micro SD.

• Pros: Creative make good products so peace of mind and perfect for music lovers
• Cons: They don’t advertise the specs very well and I couldn’t find how much RAM etc. this has and the processor is described as being their own

#5: Prestigio MultiPad Android Tablet

This has an 8” high-res screen and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well as Wi-Fi and 3D gaming options. Priced at around £150, this is a slim, compact and stylish tablet.

• Pros: 3D gaming, pre-installed apps
• Cons: It doesn’t have great reviews and isn’t as capable as some tablets in the same price range.
